SPRINGHILL
DADS v A.A. (Cup)
by
Scoop
. . . The big game has finally come around -
after their humiliating defeat by Robert Half, this is the Dads
last chance to progress in the Cup. But a couple of key players
are unable to make it; Brian has a cracked rib(?) and Dave Smith
is baby sitting.
. . . Luckily, the A.A. were short too, only
eight players made it - work, holidays and sickness all took
their toll. Ex Dads, Clive Young was in hospital having an
operation on his back. Quite a serious procedure - best wishes
and good luck for a speedy recovery,
Clive.
SPRINGHILL DADS
Les Maros
Tim Hart - Rob Thorpe - Tony Pascoe - Mark Shipside
Andy Simpson - Dave Hedges - Jim Allen - Martin Kingsbury
Alan Aburrow - John Elms
Played for A.A.; Rob Frisby, Mal Barton, Paul Hanvey . . . . . .
. . . Against such an A.A. scratch side, the Dads should walk it. However, with Rob Frisby playing for them and ace full backs Mal & Paul it's not going to be a walk-over. And so it proved - A.A. soon put the Dads under pressure, much to their surprise and disappointment. The next thing you know, Rob Frisby was put through on goal but ROBBIE THORPE denied him the goal by putting it in the net himself, despite a great save attempt by Les.
. . . The Dads were soon back on the case and were putting the A.A. under some serious pressure but were unable to convert it into goal attempts. Then, the keeper turned a shot around the post and conceded the corner. When Alan floated the ball into the box the A.A. defence were unable to clear it, the ball bobbled up and made contact with a defender's arm. John Elms immediately picked up the ball and demanded a penalty, vociferously supported by Robbie Thorpe. It was going to be the only way the Dads were going to score. John Elms wanted to take the pen but he bottled it - so Martin stepped up and blasted it home. The A.A. made Martin retake it cos they were expecting John Elms to do the foul deed. MARTIN, with absilutely no sign of nerves, made no mistake with the re-take firing it into the top right hand corner. (John later admitted he couldn't have taken the stick in the Pub afterwards if he'd missed - wimp)
HALF TIME
SPRINGHILL DADS 1 - 1 A.A.
. . . More
and more Dads pressure but no goal attempts then the A.A took the
lead again. Rob Frisby was doing a great job for the A.A.
collecting the ball played out of mid-field, holding it up and
then making it available or running through himself. One lay-off
to the winger and he had a go with with a long range effort which
sailed into the far, top corner over Les's out stretched reach.
. . . The game looked lost - with time running
out, then one glorious passing and running movement saw the Dads
pull level again when DAVE HEDGES latched onto a pass on the edge
of the box, ran through on the diagonal - short circuiting the
whole defence and fired home.
. . . With the scores tied, the teams played on
for the golden goal, thankfully, it wasn't long in coming - the
Parkie was getting impatient. Some nice build up play from the
Dads and the final ball was timed perfectly for ALAN ABURROW to
skip through the off side trap and hammer his shot passed the
hapless keeper, from point blank range.
